About the Course

Bereavement is a profound experience that can affect children and young people in many different ways. Unlike adults, children may not always have the vocabulary or understanding to express their grief, and their reactions can vary widely depending on their age, developmental stage, personality, and previous experiences of loss.

Providing support requires sensitivity, patience, and consistency. People who work with Children and Young People play a crucial role in helping them process grief. This includes creating a safe and open environment where children feel listened to, validating their feelings, and offering reassurance and stability. It also involves recognising when additional support, such as counselling or specialist services, may be necessary.

Grief is not something to “get over” quickly; it is a process that evolves over time. For children and young people, learning to navigate loss can be a formative experience, shaping their emotional resilience, coping strategies, and understanding of life’s challenges.
